Cooper J. Casillas, CFP®

Associate, Financial & Tax Planning

Cooper currently serves as a Financial & Tax Planning Associate for Canal Capital. He began his career on Capitol Hill with the House Budget Committee, where he focused on economic and tax policy at the national level. He then transitioned to the private sector, gaining experience in business development and acquisitions with Strada Education Network in Washington, D.C. From there, Cooper followed his passion to help people and joined a boutique wealth management firm here in Richmond, VA. During his six years there, Cooper was instrumental in driving substantial growth for the firm, all while serving as a lead advisor for high-net-worth families in need of comprehensive guidance.

Now at Canal, Cooper is motivated to continue that same calling with the Canal Capital family. He is integrally involved with our operations, client service, comprehensive planning, and investment management. He often tells clients he has three main goals when working together:

  1. Clear the uncertainty and dark storm cloud that can often hover over our heads when we think about our finances.
  2. Build a plan that’s clear, easy to implement, and aligned with clients’ goals and values.
  3. Identify strategies and efficiencies to avoid overpaying taxes and maximize asset growth over time.

Cooper is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and is currently pursuing his Enrolled Agent (EA) designation to further expand his tax planning expertise. He obtained his degree in Financial Economics with a minor in Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication from James Madison University. His education and technical background enable him to consistently deliver on his mission to educate and empower those he serves.

Cooper resides in Bon Air and often frequents his hometown and large extended family in Northern Virginia. He is an avid outdoorsman and semi-professional angler, always on the prowl for his next adventure. To stay active, Cooper enjoys playing basketball, golfing, and hiking with friends.
