E. Neil Gilliss MBA, CFP®

Partner & CEO

Neil is the founder of Canal Capital Management and serves as the firm’s Chief Executive Officer. He began his career at Wheat First Securities on the Trade Desk before transitioning to the advisory side of the business where he was affiliated with several large private firms. After becoming partner at a boutique Wealth Management firm, Neil decided that he wanted to build a firm that truly served the client first.

Throughout his career, Neil has provided comprehensive wealth management planning to successful business owners, professionals and families. He has extensive experience working with senior executives at Fortune 500 companies. Neil serves as head of the firm’s Investment Committee and as a General Partner for two Real Estate funds.

Neil grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia where he attended Broadwater Academy before graduating from Hampden-Sydney College with honors in Managerial Economics. Neil then went on to receive his MBA from the University of Richmond with a concentration in Investments. He is a Certified Financial Planner and Accredited Investment Fiduciary as well.

Neil and his wife Carrington live in Richmond and have two daughters, Mary Archer and Taylor. Outside of work, he enjoys playing golf and fishing when he can find the time.

Margaret J. Smith, CPA, CFP®

Partner & Director of Planning & Tax Services

Margaret is a Partner at Canal Capital and serves as the Director of Financial Planning and Tax Services. Before joining Canal, Margaret was a manager at Heritage Wealth Advisors, and prior to that she worked in research for a multinational firm, Thomson Reuters.

As Director of Financial Planning and Tax Services, Margaret focuses on proactive income and estate tax planning. Margaret also assists with the Investment Committees decision making process.

Margaret received her undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Virginia and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®).

Margaret is a native of the Northern Neck of Virginia and currently resides in Hanover with her husband, Blakely, daughter, Ellie, and sons Price and Graham. Margaret serves on the Trust Oversight Committee for the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, and on the boards of the Estate Planning Council of Richmond, Virginia, the Richmond Performing Arts Center, and the Essex County Conservation Alliance.

Noah C.P. Greenbaum

Partner & Director Of Investments

Noah has been a Canal Capital Management team member since its founding and serves as the firm’s Director of Investments. He began his career at a privately held mutual fund company before joining Neil as an analyst at their previous firm.

As Director of Investments, Noah coordinates the day to day operations surrounding Canal’s portfolio. He also leads the due diligence efforts for the firm on Private Equity, Venture Capital and Real Estate investments. Noah serves on the firm’s Investment Committee and as a General Partner for four Real Estate funds.

Noah grew up in Richmond and attended the Collegiate School before graduating from the University of Virginia. At UVA, Noah was a four-year member of the Football team and earned University Athletic Honor Roll and ACC Honor Roll recognition. Noah is a graduate of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s Mentor Richmond program. He is currently a Level II CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) candidate.

Noah and his wife Muffy live in Richmond and have three boys, Perry, Ollie and Gray. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf and cheering on the Wahoos. Noah currently serves on the Collegiate School Alumni Association Board and The Richmond Ballet Advisory Council.

Team Members

Jarrod M. Feinstein, MBA

Portfolio Manager

Jarrod serves as a Senior Portfolio Manager and Client Advisor at Canal Capital, where he focuses on day-to-day portfolio management, investment committee work, and due diligence across public stocks and bonds, private equity, venture capital, and real estate.

Jarrod began his career at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, where he spent five years on the leveraged credit team specializing in bank loans and below-investment-grade fixed income. He worked across both institutional and retail channels, constructing and managing fixed income portfolios for a broad range of clients. A defining experience during his tenure was his involvement in the launch and ongoing management of the Goldman Sachs High Yield Floating Rate Fund (GSFRX) — a 40-Act bank loan mutual fund that has since grown to nearly $2 billion in assets under management. His work spanned credit analysis, portfolio construction, and client engagement.

Jarrod went on to serve as a Vice President in Equity Research at The Buckingham Research Group, where he covered Apparel Manufacturers and Department Stores & Off-Price Retailers — developing relationships with institutional investors and the senior executives of his covered companies.

Jarrod earned his MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business with concentrations in Finance, Management, and Entrepreneurship, and holds a BSBA in Finance and Economics from Washington University in St. Louis.

A Richmond native and Freeman High School alumnus, Jarrod and his wife Rachel are raising their son Noah and daughters Claire and Maya in the city where he grew up. Outside of work, he enjoys golf and tennis. He currently serves on the WashU Alumni Association & Ambassador Program and on the Richmond Board of the World Pediatric Project.

Rob N. Solomson

Director, Real Estate

Rob is the Director of Real Estate at Canal Capital Management and runs due diligence efforts for Haxall Point Partners.

Before Canal, Rob was with Hines, one of the largest private real estate development and investment firms globally. He focused on development and acquisitions, which included the development of a 3.1 million square foot, mixed-use site in Washington, DC, the acquisition of a Life Science asset in the Philadelphia region, the rezoning efforts of a 2 million square foot, mixed-use site in the Philadelphia region, and the development of nearly 800 lots in Loudoun County.

Prior to Hines, Rob was with Lingerfelt, where he contributed to the acquisition of over $250 million (2.79 million square feet) of Industrial, Office, Retail, and Hospitality assets.

At Canal, Rob focuses on real estate, including the management of Haxall Point Partners’ proprietary real estate funds, as well as due diligence on new investments.

Rob currently serves on the Richmond Board of the World Pediatric Project. Rob received his BSBA, with a specialty in Finance, from The Ohio State University and their associated business school, The Max M. Fisher College of Business. Rob and his wife Peyton are Richmond natives, with Rob having attended Freeman High School. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf, and passionately cheering for the Buckeyes.

Lauralee G. Allen

Client Service Associate

Lauralee serves as Client Service Associate for Canal Capital. Prior to joining Canal, Lauralee served as the Director of Alumni Engagement at Collegiate School in Richmond, VA. Prior to that, she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital as a nurse.

As Client Service Associate, Lauralee focuses on maintaining existing client relationships while helping with marketing strategies and further strengthening Canal’s community liaisons.

Lauralee received her undergraduate degree in International Business and Marketing from James Madison University. She then went on to receive her nursing degree from Bon Secours which she practiced for several years.

Lauralee and her husband Will are Richmond natives and have two daughters, Grace and Noelle. Lauralee serves on the planning committee for Richmond’s SCAN and as a Fellow for James Madison University’s Foundation Board. Outside of work she enjoys reading, being with family and friends, and spending time in Whitestone, VA.

Cooper J. Casillas, CFP®

Associate, Financial & Tax Planning

Cooper currently serves as a Financial & Tax Planning Associate for Canal Capital. He began his career on Capitol Hill with the House Budget Committee, where he focused on economic and tax policy at the national level. He then transitioned to the private sector, gaining experience in business development and acquisitions with Strada Education Network in Washington, D.C. From there, Cooper followed his passion to help people and joined a boutique wealth management firm here in Richmond, VA. During his six years there, Cooper was instrumental in driving substantial growth for the firm, all while serving as a lead advisor for high-net-worth families in need of comprehensive guidance.

Now at Canal, Cooper is motivated to continue that same calling with the Canal Capital family. He is integrally involved with our operations, client service, comprehensive planning, and investment management. He often tells clients he has three main goals when working together:

  1. Clear the uncertainty and dark storm cloud that can often hover over our heads when we think about our finances.
  2. Build a plan that’s clear, easy to implement, and aligned with clients’ goals and values.
  3. Identify strategies and efficiencies to avoid overpaying taxes and maximize asset growth over time.

Cooper is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and is currently pursuing his Enrolled Agent (EA) designation to further expand his tax planning expertise. He obtained his degree in Financial Economics with a minor in Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication from James Madison University. His education and technical background enable him to consistently deliver on his mission to educate and empower those he serves.

Cooper resides in Bon Air and often frequents his hometown and large extended family in Northern Virginia. He is an avid outdoorsman and semi-professional angler, always on the prowl for his next adventure. To stay active, Cooper enjoys playing basketball, golfing, and hiking with friends.

Emily R. Gilchrist, CPA

Family Office & Accounting Associate

Emily serves as Family Office & Accounting Associate for Canal Capital. Prior to joining Canal, Emily worked at Tuckahoe Holdings for 9 years doing accounting and special projects. Prior to that, she worked in public accounting performing audits.

As Family Office & Accounting Associate, Emily focuses on family office client deliverables as well as portfolio accounting. She also assists with tax support and compliance filings.

Emily received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting and Finance from Roanoke College. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Emily and her husband Gray are Roanoke natives and have two sons, Tilden and Gaines. Outside of work she enjoys playing tennis, needlepointing, and spending time at Ocean Isle Beach, NC.

Craig D. Truitt

Business Development & Investment Associate

Craig is a Partner and Investment Associate with Canal Capital Management. Craig’s career consists of 20+ years successfully serving institutional investors and their consultants, raising in excess of $10 billion in AUM. Most recently he was a Partner at Private Advisors, LLC, an alternative asset manager, where he was responsible for North American business development. Prior to that, he served in similar capacities for Evergreen Institutional Asset Management, Tatersall Advisory Group, & Lowe, Brockenbrough & Tatersall.

As an Investment Associate, Craig assists with the due diligence of fund managers and direct Real Estate opportunities. Craig serves on the firm’s Investment Committee and as a General Partner for several Real Estate funds. Craig also consults with outside investment firms on marketing and strategy.

Craig received his B.S. in finance from Virginia Tech.

Craig and his wife Annhoner live in Richmond. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf and fly fishing. Craig served on the board of the First Tee of Richmond from 2013 – 2018 and has been actively involved in multiple non-profit organizations over his career.

Robin W. Walker

Office Manager

Robin serves as Canal Capital’s Office Manager. She handles the day to day operations of the office as well as being the first point of contact for our clients. She assists the team in all aspects of client service with processing new accounts, account maintenance, asset transfers and money movement. Robin has worked in the financial industry for most of her career, starting with an independent firm in 1994. While at that first office, she found that her strength was supporting the advisors, her fellow team members and the clients.

Robin attended Virginia Tech with a major in English and minor in Sociology. She currently lives in Midlothian with her husband Jimmie and four children. When she is not working, she enjoys all the activities with her children, walking trails through her neighborhood, and hopes one day to write a book.
